Activities

2008 - 2009 Activities

Round Robin

This year will be similar to last year’s Round Robin, with a few tweaks. Groups will once again be autonomous, meaning it’s up to each individual to get their project to the next quilter. We will assign a person from each group to be the group manager – someone to trouble shoot if necessary.

This activity requires a high degree of responsibility. Do not sign up if you can’t reliably finish your portion on time and pass it on to the next person. If an individual repeatedly makes life difficult for other members in the group, they will not be welcome to join next year!

You will sign up for Round Robins in September. This year, we ask that you limit your choice to just ONE group.

Your Options (in order of increasing difficulty)

  1. Row Robin:  This quilt is made by adding rows instead of borders. The rows will be 12 ½” high   (12 “finished) x 36 ½” wide.  It’s easy because it requires few calculations and less time. (Good for those with limited experience)
  2. Basic Round Robin: The quilt owner creates a 12 ½” block (12 “finished). Each added border is 6 ½” (6” finished). It is not too difficult to calculate sizes because the rows and center are uniform. (Slightly more difficult than a Row Robin)
  3. Intermediate Round Robin: Participants are given more leeway in choosing sizes. This year, the center block can square or rectangular with a maximum perimeter of 60 inches. Suggested border width is 4 ½” to 8 ½” (4” – 8” finished). Get out your calculators because you won’t know what to expect with sizes – BUT it won’t be that difficult and it will challenge you a bit more.
  4. Appliqué Round Robin: You choose a theme and each participant creates a 12 ½” appliquéd block for that theme. When you get your four blocks back, you finish your wall sized quilt off as you wish (either adding more blocks or just a border).
  5. Crazy Round Robin:  Participants create a miniature crazy quilt on muslin backing measuring approximately 20” square. This crazy quilt is circulated, with each quilter adding their own stitches and embellishments to one section of the quilt.  This round robin is great for people who like handwork. (No machine embellishing allowed!)
  6. Miniature Round Robin:  Start with a 4 ½” center block. Borders are up to 2” (finished) in width.  This round robin is challenging because everything is so small. Each border must be composed of little pieces so that when you look at the quilt, it looks like a much larger quilt that was magically shrunk.

The deadlines for the Round Robin correspond to Sunday Meeting Dates

(Please note that the Appliqué Group varies slightly – see special note)

October 19, 2008:   Bring your center block or row.

November 16, 2008:  First border or row

January 18, 2009:  Second border or row

March 15, 2009:  Third border or row

April 19, 2009:  Fourth border or row. Quilt returned to original owner. Show and Tell!

Special Note For the Appliqué Group:

For the first meeting (October), come prepared with the theme you have chosen, along with background material for the blocks. Make sure you have enough background fabric to make four 12 ½” blocks plus some extra for emergencies.  You will be making one block for each of your teammates with the following meeting due dates:  November, January, February, and March. In March, you will receive the four appliqué blocks which the others have made for you. Assemble them for show and tell in April.
