2009-2010 Activities

Tree of Life Challenge – 2009-2010 Challenge

The theme for our challenge is “Tree of Life”.  What does this mean to you?  Some may immediately think of the traditional Tree of Life quilt block.  Perhaps the Shaker Tree of Life symbols, family trees, ecology, connections with friends, or life cycles come to mind.  Allow yourself to draw from your own life, cultural, or spiritual experiences to create a quilt that is meaningful to you.

The rules are simple.  The quilt may be traditional or non-traditional.  The work from design to quilting should be your own.  If it is professionally quilted, please credit the quilter.  The size range - no smaller than 96” (24”x24”) and no larger than 240” (60”x60”) circumference - will allow the creation of wall hangings to crib or lap size quilts. Of course, rectangles within the same circumference ranges are acceptable.  Quilt techniques are your choice.  Completed quilts will be shown at the September 2010 meeting.

Colorful Song Title Challenge

Using a song title with a color in it, make a quilted item. The project could be a small wall hanging, a purse, tote bag, vest, table runner, a lap quilt or something else you would like to make.  It must be a finished item. Sounds simple enough! Let's give it a try to coordinate with our May guest, Song Writer, Kathy Miller.

 General Guidelines are HERE.

Block of the Month - Memories of Cape Cod

This year the block of the month will be handled in a different manner.  Going along with the theme of the anniversary of the guild and memories, the block of the month will be a quilt about Memories of Cape Cod.

You will only make a block for your own quilt top.  You will not be turning one in for a drawing as in previous years. Patterns will be handed out starting in September and continuing thru April.  The blocks will be 9 inches finished so the top ends up as a wall hanging or table topper.  There will be piecing and appliqué involved - but nothing too complex.   The appliqué can be done by machine or by hand - your choice.

For questions call Betsy Palmer, Cathy Carpentier, or Terri Donnelly.

Round Robin

We will be keeping with our favorites and also adding a few newcomers to our Round robins. Please pick one project to join, to allow all members the chance to participate. Members will sign up for their choice of round robin at the September meeting. They will be put into groups and get their assigned group at the October meeting. From then on the projects will circulate according to the lists on the boxes. Contact Linda Saucier if you aren’t going to be at the September meeting and want to join—or if you have questions.

Remember :  Measurements given below are FINISHED. Be sure to add 1/2” to your border or row to allow for seam allowances (i.e. if a border is 6” finished, make a 6 1/2 “ border)

·         Basic Row (Good for beginners):  Rows are 12” high (finished) by 36” long.

·         Basic Round (Good for beginners):  You make a 12” (finished) center block. Your team mates add 6” (finished) borders.

·         Intermediate Round (a bit more challenging - more math): You make a center block, square or rectangle.  It can measure anywhere from 8” to 16” (finished). Your team mates add borders measuring anywhere from 4” to 8” (finished).

·         Two Color Basic Round:  Quilt is limited to 2 colors of your choice. You make a 12” (finished) center block. Your team mates add 6” (finished) borders.

·         Crazy Quilt (hand work only):  Owner constructs 24” square of whatever fabrics in whatever configuration is desired and the block moves each month among the participants who add their own handwork and embellishments.

·         Red Work: Participants will put their background and floss into the box which travels among the group. Each month Participants will embroider two red work squares. The owner will do the first 2 squares and may specify a theme.

·         Fat Quarter Shoe Box: Participants will start the exchange with 24 fat quarters, separated into 12 sets of dark/light (or whatever combo the owner likes) - all in the shoe box. The owner will construct the first 2 blocks, using 2 of the fat quarter pairs and each participant will pick 2 pairs of fat quarters to make two more blocks. Blocks will all be different. Assemble for Show and Tell in May.

·         Mini Round: (advanced-small pieces, accuracy required) Center no larger than 4” finished. Rows no bigger than 2” finished.

Mystery Quilt 2009-10

Mary Maguire and Terry LaBombard are back to their old tricks with this year’s Mystery Quilt project.

This time around, the mystery will begin in the fall and last through summer 2010, with the big reveal in September 2010.  Sign up at the September meeting. (Contact Mary or Terry if you won’t be there). The cost is $10.

You will have many options—based on your skill level and preferences and you can get your clues all at once or one at a time.  Have fun!

Secret Quilter

If you like to exchange small gifts and cards, you will like Secret Quilter. Sign up for this activity at the September meeting or call Stacey Smith, the event organizer ASAP.  Secret quilt buddies will be assigned shortly after the September meeting so don’t delay.

Remember, exchanges need not be big and expensive—just something you think your recipient might enjoy.

Cornerstone Banner Contest

To commemorate our 10th anniversary, we will be making a new guild banner and you can help.

Submit your idea for the banner on or before the October meeting. Here are the guidelines:

1. Entries can be sketched by hand or designed with EQ.

2. Size is 24” x 40”.

3. Orientation is vertical. (It will be hung with the long side going down).

4. Must contain a cornerstone block.

Submit your design to Sue Therriault at the September or October meeting. You can also mail it to her.  Another option is to email her at susan_theriault@msn.com

The board will vote on the entries at the October board meeting and announce the winner in November. Volunteers will make the banner and it will be revealed at our birthday party in May.

Upcoming Workshops for 2009 – 2010

Attention!! There has been an important change in workshop dates and location. All workshops will take place on the first Saturday of the month at the Southbridge Savings Bank on Route 20 in Sturbridge (except where otherwise noted).  Workshops start at 10 am generally last until 4 pm. The cost of a workshop has increased to $10.00 and is payable in advance.

February 6 - Cotton Theory by Judy Bachand

March 6 - Quilt As You Go by  Linda Saucier

May 1- Rangley Star by Judy Bachand

June 5 - Table Runner by Lucie Satkowski

Special Note About Workshops: This year you will be allowed to sign up for any of our scheduled workshops beginning in September. The $10 workshop fee is non-refundable and payable upon registration.

Are You Wondering Why Your Workshop Checks Aren’t Cashed Immediately?

When you sign up for a future workshop and give us a check, we keep it until the workshop actually happens. That way, if the workshop is cancelled we can simply return your check. We hope this does not inconvenience anyone.

NOTICE

STARTING IN JUNE, ALL WORKSHOPS WILL REQUIRE AT LEAST EIGHT (8) PEOPLE MINIMUM FOR THE WORKSHOP TO GO FORWARD.  YOU MUST PAY YOUR $10.00 AT THE TIME YOU SIGN UP TO HOLD YOUR SPOT IN THE WORKSHOP.  SIMPLY PUTTING YOUR NAME ON THE LIST IS NOT ENOUGH.   THE $10.00 IS NON-REFUNDABLE, UNLESS THE CLASS IS CANCELED BY THE GUILD.   THIS POLICY IS IN PLACE TO ASSURE THAT THE TEACHER OF THE WORKSHOP IS GETTING THE NUMBER OF STUDENTS REQUIRED FOR THE TIME AND PREPARATION FOR THE WORKSHOP.

Planning Ahead

Several members have offered to help plan activities and help with ongoing projects.  Fresh faces and ideas will translate to more interesting activities going forward.  Edna Dresser, Gaye Kenyon and Pauline Stockman will be involved directly with the Activities Committee.  Irene Rose will be chairing the Holiday Party subcommittee.  Youll see Gail Caika and Susan Ahnrud at the Activities sign-up table.  Stacey Smith will organize Secret Quilters and Linda Saucier will organize the Round Robin activity for next year.

If you have a specific interest in organizing a Guild activity, please let Mary Lee Breault know.  All are welcome with open arms.

Outreach - Our guild has given away over 400 quilts to many deserving causes. Members donate their time, materials, and even completed quilt tops.

Outreach has presented us with a new project:  Make a cheerful pillowcase for a child who is sick with cancer or another serious illness.  Directions for making a standard-size pillowcase.

Please see our special outreach page for more information and for pictures.
