“Quilt As You Go”
By Linda Saucier
This workshop is designed to demonstrate a technique for
doing the actual quilting of your quilt block-by-block, or in strips of
blocks, and then putting the whole quilt together with sashing. This
results in a quilt which has a pieced backing, basically of strips. If you
want to bring finished quilt blocks to quilt and assemble you can do that.
Alternately, I have a pattern to make a table runner that involves using
the ‘sashing assembly’ technique, as well as the basic ‘quilt-as-you-go’
technique.
TABLE RUNNER MATERIALS
Bring basic cutting tools, machine, pins, thread, etc.,
and hand sewing needle.
The table runner is reversible-
For one side, - six coordinating fabrics are needed, as
follows:
A- piece measuring 8” x 16”- cut to two 7&3/8”
squares
B- Piece measuring 8” square, plus two 2¼” strips,
each 28” long.
C, D, & E- strips 2 ¼ “wide and 30”; 21”, and
9” long (one of each length).
F- This is for the sashing. 1 & 5/8” strips
will be needed, totaling about 42” in length.
Fabric for the other side- four coordinating
fabrics-these can be 2 fat quarters for the squares, plus strips:
A- two 7 3/8” squares
B- two 7 3/8” squares
C- one 8” square plus two 28” long strips
that are 2 ¼ “ wide
D- For sashing, coordinating fabric cut in a 1 &1/8”
strip is needed, totally about 42” in length.
Also bring batting, cut into rectangles of 10 ¾” by
7”.
To bind the runner, at least 95” of binding is
needed.
If you want to do the ‘sashing assembly’ technique but
not the table runner, bring the blocks you wish to assemble, backing
fabric, sashing fabric, and batting. The backing is cut to the same size as
the blocks for assembly. Sashing is needed for the backing also.
